Fiber Splicer

Location: Louisville


In this role an employee will be expected to develop and demonstrate proficiency within the following responsibilities and competencies; to perform tasks associated with the maintenance and splicing fiber optical telecommunication systems. Such as but not limited to:

• Prep, Dress, Store fiber optic cabling to specifications and assemble equipment according to design specifications.

• Perform fiber optic splicing as well as understand engineering and splicing drawings.

• Ability to fusion splice SM ribbon and loose tube fiber optic cables, to include or terminate various types of fiber optic connectors (ST, SC, LC)

 • Read interpret and understand fiber matrix, plant design files and complete required documentation files, such as asbuilts in electronic and/or hard copy as required.

• Prep of armored/unarmored cables, ribbon and loose tube fiber, mid-sheaths. • Installation and re-enter of various enclosure types, patch panel, muxs e.g. (WDM / CWDM / DWDM).

• Installation and dressing of fiber optic cables (vertical/horizontal).

• Preform splicing and testing on aerial activate, and troubleshoot fiber links after installation, and /or underground fiber plant.

• Hanging and securing of enclosures and storage loops in aerial/ underground locations.

• Maintain proper inventory on vehicle based on work assignment.

• Operate vehicle and bucket lift safely, following all safety and traffic regulations.

• Prepare paperwork to track daily production, and accurately record completed work on job site blueprints.

• Other responsibilities as directed by Supervision Other Functions

Other Functions:

• Must be capable of handling a variety of responsibilities simultaneously while working under pressure or tight deadline.

• Provide management with detailed reports of field splicing activity and workload status in order to meet designated goals.

• Ability to interact effectively with other team members.

• Availability to work, weekends, nights and holidays will be required in an on-call (standby) situation.

Job Requirements

• Minimum three years’ experience in fiber optics or system assembly and testing.

• Demonstrate strong knowledge and ability in using standard fiber optic preparation and splicing equipment, OTDR, fusion splicer, power meters, identifiers, and associated hand tools.

• Demonstrated competence in using standard fiber optic preparation and splicing equipment, and OTDRs.

• A background in Fiber Optic splicing documentation practices.

• Demonstrated ability to use technical terms to communicate verbally and in writing.

• Minimum of 3 years’ experience required in prepping and splicing ribbon fiber sized up to 48 fibers.

• Minimum of 3 years’ experience prepping and splicing loose tube fiber, all sizes.

• Minimum of 3 years’ of experience installing, maintaining/repairing and testing fiber optic networks, including bi-directional tests.

• Working knowledge of using various fusion splicing and optical testing equipment including, Alcoa Fujikura, GN Net Test, EXFO, Fitel, Sumitomo, and Viavi.

• Ability to splice a mux and have knowledge on troubleshooting from node to headend

• Node optimization skills and birthing capability a must

• Must be able to read and interpret cable prints

• Possess a valid driver’s license (class 'C' minimum) or be eligible and willing to obtain the required license for the position (possibly class 'B' - light commercial)

• Capable of working in all temperatures, climates, and weather conditions.

• Willingness to work shifts as assigned, including daily overtime when necessary.

• Must be certified pole climber or capable of demonstrating proficiency as a pole climber.

• Must own all required hand tools and climbing gear needed to perform the daily functions of the position.

• Able to perform the physical tasks required in this position for the entire assigned shift.

 • Must be able to pass background and drug screen.

• Standing - 6 to 8 hours daily

• Walking - 4 to 6 hours daily

• Climbing - 6 to 8 hours daily

• Bending/Twisting - 6 to 8 hours daily

• Pushing/Pulling - 4 to 6 hours daily

• Repetitive Motion (grasping, manipulation) - 6 to 8 hours daily

• Lifting (weights up to 100lbs.) - occasionally

• Lift & Carry (weights of 50 to 60 lbs.) - regularly / daily
